Description
The Gymnocalycium mihanovichii ‘Moon Cactus’ (Ohana Novicia) is one of the most eye-catching indoor plants available, known for its bold, vibrant colours and unique grafted structure.
Native to South America, specifically Paraguay and Northeast Argentina, this species was first discovered in 1903 and naturally grows at elevations up to 500 metres. What makes this plant truly special is its mutant top (scion) — which lacks chlorophyll. This means it cannot produce its own energy through photosynthesis, revealing stunning shades of red, orange, or yellow pigmentation.
To survive, the colourful top is grafted onto a green rootstock cactus (commonly from the Hylocereus family), which supports it by supplying nutrients and energy. This combination creates what is commonly known as a Moon Cactus, also referred to as:
- Ruby Ball Cactus
- Red Cap Cactus
- Hibotan Cactus
This contrast between the vivid top and the green base makes it a standout feature piece, perfect for modern interiors.
